Since Nursing school requires a background check along with fulfillment of vaccinations, a GPA of at least 3.2 and CPR certification, it is a lot to take care of before the beginning of the first semester in the nursing program. Also, there's not a lot of forgiveness for mistakes with the application, problems with getting vaccinations or fulfilling requirements. Either you get it all done or you don't get into the program. Time has to be budgeted to make sure all requirements are met.

Friendliness and Consistent Classmates – Since it's a pretty small school, you see a lot of the same people in your classes. This can really work in your favor as not everyone takes the same classes at the same time. So I can ask friends with whom I've had several courses about which professor would be best to take for the next semester. It helps keep the professors honest since I've seen half a roster drop a class from a professor that no one liked. I've also seen classes be added because a certain professor was so success... read more

Small Group – Since Marian is a small school, the attention from academic advisors is very focused. I know my academic advisor is aware of my work schedule along with my current GPA and class standing. They always find time to talk to me if I have a question about my current or upcoming program requirements. The only thing I wish was more available was financial aid for second degree students. I am having a hard time finding the funds to pay for a degree from a private university.

Nap Town – Indianapolis is not terribly vibrant in most places. While the Broad Ripple area has plenty of good restaurants and a few good clubs, Indy is a fairly quiet city. The art museum is pretty nice as are the parks and biking trails available. Most of the city is family oriented with a fantastic zoo and the annual state fair. But don't expect to go wild in the city without taking a 2-hour drive to Chicago.

What I Expected – It's always up to the student to figure out how best to approach the program and to discuss this plan with their academic advisor. So it's up to me to keep an open dialog and talk about any problems I may have along the way. Nursing isn't a major for everyone since it requires a lot of time spent studying. I have to spend at least 2 or 3 hours in the library every day studying for my classes. I make lots of note cards. I even outline chapters from the textbooks. I plan to spend at least a few years workin... read more

Some Students Drink, but Not on Campus – As a private university, Marian has a strict drug/alcohol policy. Any drugs or alcohol found in on-campus housing result in eviction from the dorms and can bring academic sanctions. However, I've overheard conversations from fellow students about how they spend their weekends. Some of the students like to party, but that's to be expected. The university does not discipline these students if they avoid legal trouble. Were a student to be caught drinking underage or soliciting drugs, t... read more

Close to Downtown – Marian University is very close to downtown. There are so many options. Some are affordable and some are expensive. You can find fast food restaurants, but you can also find nice sit down restaurants too.

They Do the Work for You! They are up to date on which scholarships are available to you and usually apply them to your financial aid without you doing the work.
